4.1 Support student participation
'Alex ensured a positive, supportive and appropriate classroom for safe learning' (VHHS Report).
During my placements I used a number of strategies to encourage student participation. At VHHS I would get the same volunteers to contribute to the class every time so I put all their names on paddle pop sticks and selected one at random whenever I need a contribution.
At Gleeson College I had the tables set up in groups of four, which allowed for groups to participate with each other so they could have more of a voice and greater confidence to contribute ideas in a small group.
I was often required to differentiate tasks for NEP students at Gleeson in order to ensure they could participate meaningfully in the task. I also ensured these students were evenly distributed across the group tables so they could be supported by their friends and peers in order to participate.
