1.1 Physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students
'Alex was very aware of the needs of the year 9 student, particularly their attention span and especially their need for a variety of learning techniques' (Gleeson report).
During my placements I was required to teach a variety of students from different age groups, backgrounds and abilities. I was able to adapt learning programs to suit the characteristics of both the group and the individual students within the class. One example was understanding a particularly year 8 group at Victor Harbour High School (VHHS). This group as a collective struggled with staying on task and had a number of diverse personalities and learning styles. I tried to keep lessons with this group very fast paced with a strong task focus. It was also important with this group to stress the importance of time allocated to work on assignments. I designed an assignment that would be completed step by step as the class learnt about each element of the assignment. This prevented a large block of work being required at the end of the unit and meant a greater percentage that was normal for that group were able to complete the task by the due date.
