3.5 Use effective classroom communication
'His communication in class was excellent and each new technique suggested by his mentor was put into practice and reinforced throughout the practicum' (Gleeson Report).
I used a variety of communication skills and styles throughout my practicum experiences. I needed to effectively communicate with an entire class at one time, individual students and other teachers. In communicating with an entire class I ensured I had the attention of the entire group and made it clear that I had no intention of talking to myself while they had private conversations. In one case I had to keep a class in for five minutes at lunch time because they had wasted most of the five minutes I had set aside to wrap up the lesson and provide final instructions for homework. I had made it clear I needed to communicate with them and then i stood up the front until they were ready to listen and this took them too long so we used their time to finish the lesson instead.
Communicating with individual students whilst in class is a skill that requires an awareness of what everyone else is doing whilst simultaneously assisting the student.
